About the event

After the sold-out success of An Actors’ Playground, we’re giving the people what they want! What A Character is a workshop for actors who want to explore, learn, and exercise techniques to help access character and unpick that golden ideal of ‘transformation’.

Join us at the Royal Exchange for this 3 hour intensive workshop, where you’ll have both the space and guidance to hone a monologue you’re currently learning or currently trying to resuscitate.

As an actor, it’s really important to have a tasty lil speech up your sleeve but sometimes monologues are tough. We’re up there alone for god sake! How are we supposed to access the stakes, the context, the character in those grueling 3 seconds between the ‘whenever you’re ready’, ‘in your own time’, ‘I’ll just take a quick sip of water first’ and clearing our throats!? Don’t even get us started on trying to rehearse it timidly in our bedrooms...

What A Character will provide a welcoming, energetic, and explorative space where we will approach character in a myriad of ways. From analytical skills to movement principles, from imagination to collaboration, let’s make those speeches fresh, and let’s make those speeches specific. As well as honing and sharing our monologues, Hawkseed will be bringing along some duologues to work with too.

If you don’t have a monologue you’re currently working on but would still like to attend, then stop frettin’ right now! We can provide some options for you just email hawkseedtheatre@gmail.com in advance so that you have enough time to become familiar with it before the workshop.

We also want to provide a space where we can answer any questions about Hawkseed and our work and (really importantly) a space for you to connect and network with the other artists. We want to form a community of artists who can inspire, challenge, and support one another.

This workshop is for over 18s. We have a budget to support participant access requirements, so please do get in touch with us at hawkseedtheatre@gmail.com if you have any questions regarding this.

We have 5 tickets priced at Pay What You Decide. These are aimed at people for whom finance is a barrier. Please only book a Pay What You Decide ticket if finance would prevent you from booking a £5 ticket. On the day, it will be kept confidential who has booked which kind of ticket.
